Do I have to email backup file to myself?

Yes you do. It is not a real backup as long as backup file and the contacts stored on the same device.

So you must sent backup file (*.vcf) to your email account and keep it in your Inbox. If your device get lost or stolen, you can recover your contacts easily using backup files stored in your mail account on any device.
